While out on bail he was not allowed to use cannabis for his severe nausea from the many meds he had to take for his HIV. Renee Boje was helping illustrate a book about medical marijuana for him and Todd McCormick. She fled to Canada because of the risk of a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years to life for allegedly watering the plants, and because of the sexual harassment she experienced in jail after being arrested.
